Care and learning in higher education in 2025: the latest picture on care experienced and estranged students at university

10.40am – 11.10am BST, 4 July 2025 ‐ 30 mins

Presentation

The Unite Foundation supports care experienced and estranged students in higher education through a scholarship scheme, a student community – All of Us – and wider policy influencing work to ensure that all care experienced and estranged students are able to benefit from everything university has to offer.

In partnership with Unite Students, Unite Foundation commissioned research from the Social Market Foundation into a ‘state of the nation’ report. The report, ‘Care and Learning in Higher Education’, was directed towards the current UK government, and identifies the key policy changes needed to boost access, retention and attainment of care experienced and estranged young people.

This session sets out the findings of the report – both the challenges identified and the many opportunities. What direct steps are being taken in response to the report? What do the findings say about the small and immediate actions higher education providers can take to secure better outcomes for care experienced and estranged students? This session looks at various case studies and examples of what institutions are doing at the moment.
