How can we make reasonable adjustments the exception not the rule?

Presentation

Bath Spa University (BSU) showcases some of the Disability Service’s innovative projects that have been developed with other professional services, academic colleagues and students, raising the bar for inclusive teaching and learning practice and addressing the challenges of significantly increased numbers of students with individualised reasonable adjustment plans.

Working closely with stakeholders from across BSU, particularly the Teaching Expertise Development team, the Disability Service has been creative in its thinking and designed a new approach using UDL (Universal Design for Learning) principles to embed the majority of reasonable adjustments into general teaching practice, so that individualised adjustments become the exception, not the rule.

They have built consensus for change across the university and developed robust training and guidance for staff, alongside student-centred approaches to skills development and self-advocacy / agency, to ensure that disabled students feel confident in their inclusive practice, know their needs will be met, and that they genuinely ‘matter and belong’ at BSU.
