Sunny side up: using positive affect journaling to support student wellbeing and enhance the curriculum

11.40am – 12.40pm BST, 4 July 2025 ‐ 1 hour

Workshop

Recent studies have shown that positive affect journaling (PAJ) – a process that encourages individuals to write about positive aspects of life experiences – can decrease mental distress and increase wellbeing. If carried out over longer periods, it has even been reported that PAJ can reduce symptoms and depression and anxiety.

This workshop outlines a research project run in collaboration with Student Support and Success and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Winchester, working with students and colleagues using PAJ activities.

The project focuses on supporting mental wellbeing through developing a sense of belonging and mattering amongst students and staff, not just through the use of PAJ, but also through the development of positive relationships.

The work has also supported senior staff in terms of their wellbeing, creating a stronger sense of mattering amongst this cohort and also developing increased staff confidence in talking about mental wellbeing matters with students and colleagues. It has also opened opportunities for innovative curriculum developments.
