An introduction to Samaritans Step by Step Service

10.40am – 11.10am BST, 3 July 2025 ‐ 30 mins

Presentation

Step by Step is a Samaritans service that provides practical support to help organisations prepare for and recover from a suspected or attempted suicide. The service was started in 2010 as a response to the Bridgend tragedies. It’s available to schools, colleges and universities. The service is for staff, not students, and offers guidance and support in three key areas:

  1. Help with preparing a ‘Critical Incident Plan’ so that the response to a suicide is prompt, proactive and proportionate. Samaritans also check that an existing plan is fit for purpose.
  2. Samaritans offer instant support to those managing the response to a death in all aspects of the incident.
  3. Samaritans attend or chair a ‘Review and Reflect’ meeting following a death to help assess how the aftermath was managed.
  4. Samaritans engage in any discussion about any aspect of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention in higher education provider contexts.

Step by Step is unique. There is no other organisation that offers all these services. Join this session to find out more.
