Epigeum: creating a safer, more inclusive university
Creating a safer, more inclusive university environment requires both personal awareness and systemic action. That’s why we strongly encourage institutions to subscribe to Consent Matters and Tackling Harassment & Sexual Misconduct — two complementary programmes that equip students and staff with the skills and confidence to foster respectful relationships and challenge harmful behaviours.
Tackling Harassment and Sexual Violence focuses on recognising harmful behaviours, intervention, and community support. The programme:
- Introduces students to broader campus safety issues.
- Focuses on identifying behaviours that undermine respect and addressing them.
- Helps students understand how to intervene in harmful situations and recognise when boundaries are being crossed.
- Provides tools for responding to and intervening in harmful behaviours or microaggressions.
- Equips students with the knowledge to provide trauma-informed care and support to peers who have experienced harm.
- Empowers students to shape the larger university culture by promoting safety and inclusivity.
Consent Matters focuses on individual relationships, boundaries, and proactive communication. The programme:
- Sets the foundation for respectful relationships.
- Focuses on practical skills for communicating boundaries and consent.
- Empowers students to set and respect boundaries.
- Teaches proactive approaches to ensuring consent and respect in friendships.
- Strengthens confidence in intervening and supporting others.
- Helps students to guide others in maintaining respectful relationships.
Using both programmes together ensures students and staff are both prepared for personal interactions and equipped to handle broader societal issues, and leads to a safer, more inclusive campus culture.
