Winter conference 2017: call for session proposals

The AMOSSHE Winter Conference 2017 takes place on Friday 17 February 2017 in Manchester. This event for Student Services leaders and practitioners explores the theme ‘Engaging communities’ – how we can engage institutional colleagues and stakeholders to create effective relationships, and how we can create engaging communities for our students that enhance their learning experience and promote retention and success.

The deadline to propose a session for the AMOSSHE Winter Conference 2017 has passed (it was no later than 17:00 on Wednesday 9 November 2016). If you're still interested in getting involved with the event, or have any questions, please contact us.

About the conference and sessions

The Winter Conference 2017 will be AMOSSHE’s third winter conference, and the event has grown in size year on year. For 2017 we anticipate that about 150 people will take part, and each delegate will choose the sessions they want to attend. Your session might have up to 60 delegates taking part.

The conference takes place all day on Friday 17 February 2017 at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate hotel in Manchester.

The conference theme is ‘Engaging communities’ and your session should address one or both of the strands within this:

  • How Student Services can engage institutional colleagues and stakeholders to create effective relationships.
  • How Student Services can create engaging communities for students that enhance their learning experience and promote retention and success.

Why should I submit a proposal?

AMOSSHE needs the imaginative input of members and the broader sector in order to be truly relevant and productive for Student Services professionals. Your participation shapes the agenda and ensures that the AMOSSHE Winter Conference is relevant, useful, and inspiring.

Leading a workshop or presenting at our conference is a good way to explore new ideas, get feedback on your work, develop your professional confidence and standing, and start new discussions. You or your colleagues may have undertaken initiatives or research that others can learn from, you may have inspiring success stories to tell, or there may be challenges that you want to explore in a structured way in order to share good practice and develop new strategies.

As another benefit of contributing to the event, one session leader for each accepted proposal can claim a free delegate place at the Winter Conference.

How does AMOSSHE decide which proposals to accept?

The Winter Conference team (Executive members Jayne Aldridge and Fay Sherrington, with the National Office staff) will carefully consider all session proposals, and choose the successful proposals by asking the following questions:

  • Is the session engaging, informative, inspiring?
  • Is the session relevant to Student Services professionals?
  • Does the session engage with the conference theme?
  • Will the session contribute to members’ continuing professional development?

Your session proposal should answer these questions satisfactorily.

What happens if my proposal is accepted?

The AMOSSHE National Office team will let you know whether your proposal is successful no later than Wednesday 23 November 2016. If you’re successful, the team will give you feedback about your proposal, and may make suggestions to further enhance the session. We’ll also discuss and agree with you an advance date for you to send a copy of your completed presentation and any other session materials. These materials will be made available in the members’ area of this website following the conference, unless there are particular issues of confidentiality or inaccuracy that would make this inappropriate. The conference team will do their best to accommodate room seating and presenter support requests where possible.
